Laser Vision Correction Checklist

  1. Will the surgeon personally do my screening? Who would you want telling you if you are a candidate for laser eye surgery (the technician, the sales person or the surgeon MD)?
  2. Will the surgeon be available to answer all my concerns and questions?
  3. Will I personally see my surgeon for all my pre-op and post-operative care?
  4. Is the facility that will do my Laser Vision Correction backed by the major hospitals in the area and is the equipment upgraded on a regular basis?
  5. Is the facility employing deceptive, inaccurate or overly sensational advertising (if it sounds too good to be true, be very cautious)?
  6. Will my surgeon discuss procedures other than LASIK that maybe better and safer for me?
  7. Has the technology that will be used on my eyes been tried and tested exhaustively on millions of patients worldwide or am I a guinea pig for some new instrument?
  8. What is my surgeon's complication rate and retreatment rate?
  9. Has my surgeon treated thousands of patients successfully and are they established and respected in the area (not a traveling surgeon)?
  10. Has my surgeon completed an accredited fellowship in refractive surgery?
  11. Is my surgeon available or accessible if there is a complication after my surgery?
  12. Do I feel rushed and under pressure to commit to surgery during my initial consultation?
  13. Does my surgeon inform me that laser vision correction does not provide perfect vision, but rather will make me much more functional with decreased dependence on glasses and contact lenses?
  14. Does my surgeon show concern about my well being rather than treating me like a number?
